Solar & Wind Energy:
Cost-Effective, Scalable, Smart Energy Management Systems

An Advantech customer needed a reliable solar monitoring platform with data collection and transmission to cloud-based monitoring systems, including meteorological sensors, inverters, energy meters, and LV transformers.
The main goal was to implement green technology for potential project bids to tap into rising demand for greener, more sustainable buildings. Customer challenges included supply, installation, commissioning, and integration of two 1.5 megawatt-peak (MWp) floating solar PV systems.
The Solution:
A systems integrator designed a solution to extract data from meteorological sensors, inverters, and DC combiners and convert it to Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) to safeguard the reliable process of packets. The system uses an energy gateway device to collect Modbus/TCP data from the field. The data is locally stored, then obtained using Advantech’s data logger, UNO-2271G V3.
•Enables key energy management tasks and maximizes solar power output.
•The web-based platform makes immediate access to data possible.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS):
Building a Connected IoT Infrastructure to Achieve BESS Efficiency

To ensure efficient operation of BESS, connected IoT infrastructure must address control and management challenges. A recent Advantech customer needed to implement effective HVAC control with reliable I/O signaling, specifically analog inputs, and digital outputs for alarm detection and HVAC actuation.
At the operational layer, the customer required edge gateways for real-time data processing and localized control tasks, ensuring responsive and reliable system behavior.
The Solution:
Intel-powered UNO-2271G V3 edge computers support central management, running supervisory management systems that continuously monitor operational status of each battery bank. The devices also provide the computational power needed for data analysis and control coordination.
Each battery rack has an ADAM-6717 I/O gateway acting as an HVAC controller and integrating I/O modules and basic computing for critical function management like temperature, control processes, and alarms/events.
To coordinate multiple racks, ECU-150 edge gateways are deployed to manage communication and device operations within each battery bank and aggregate data for transmission to the UNO-2271G V3.
